Prof. Irene Man Chi Lo

Prof. Irene M. C. Lo is currently a Chair Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and has been joining HKUST since 1992. She received her Master and PhD degrees in Civil (Environmental) Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Prof. Lo is an elected Academician of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (EASA). She is the first Hong Kong scholar inducted into the EASA. She is an elected Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (FHKIE), and elected Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (FASCE). Prof. Lo has held 2 patents, edited 9 technical books, and published over 270 SCI journal articles and conference papers with citation over 8000+. Her research areas include magnetic nanomaterial-based technology for water and wastewater treatment; soil/sediment/groundwater remediation; fate and transport of nanoparticles; and solid waste treatment and management.


Prof. Baolin Deng

 Southern University of Science and Technology, China

Title of Speech: Designing nanocomposite membranes for specific water treatment applications

Dr. Baolin Deng is Chair Professor in Environmental Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology. He is currently on leave from the University of Missouri where he is LaPierre Professor in the Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering.  Deng’s research concerns with drinking water treatment, wastewater treatment and reuse, membrane fabrication and application, and important environmental process kinetics and mechanisms relevant to contaminated site remediation. He has been PI/co-PI for over three dozen research projects including the CAREER award from the National Science Foundation. He published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters with >5000 citation and H-index 38 (Google Scholar).  Deng has served on the EPA Science Advisory Board Drinking Water Committee, and is the Asian Regional Editor for Environmental Engineering Science.


Prof. Rao Y. Surampalli

Title of Speech: Sustainable Resource Recovery and Reuse in Bioreactor Landfills

Prof. Rao Y. Surampalli is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Global Institute for Energy, Environment and Sustainability. He was with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for 29 years and retired as an Engineer Director. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in EnvironmentalEngineering from Oklahoma State and Iowa State Universities, respectively. He has conducted research on fifty (50) environmental engineering topics; including on bioconversion of wastes to valueaddedproducts (e.g., biodiesel, bioplastics); occurrence, fate/transport and removalof emerging contaminants (e.g., pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting chemicals) in the environment; water and wastewatertreatment; wastewater reuse and resource recovery; solid and hazardous waste management; environmental toxicity and risk ofnanomaterials; bioremediation of contaminated sites and groundwater; and climate change mitigation and adaptation. He is an Adjunct Professor in seven universities and distinguished/honorary visiting professor in five universities. He is a Distinguished Engineering Alumnus of both the Oklahoma State and Iowa State Universities, and is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, an elected Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, an elected Member of the Russian Academy of Engineering, an elected Fellow of the Water Environment Federation and International Water Association, and a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. He also is Editor-in-Chief of the ASCE Journal of Hazardous and Toxic Waste, and Nanotechnology for Environmental Engineering (a Springer Journal), and past Vice-Chair of Editorial Board of Water Environment Research Journal. He has authored over 700 technical publications, including 21 patents, 20 books, 129 book chapters, 317 refereed journal articles, 234 national and international conference presentations and presented over 127 plenary/keynote or invited presentations worldwide. He has received over 30 national awards/honors from various professional organizations.


Dr. Chunming Su

Title of Speech: Aggregation, sedimentation, transport, and retention of nanohybrids of reduced graphene oxide/carbon nanotubes and metal/metal oxides in aqueous solutions and saturated porous media

Dr. Chunming Su is a Soil Scientist in the Groundwater, Watershed, and Ecosystem Restoration Division, National Risk Management Research Laboratory, Office of Research and Development (ORD), United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). Dr. Su’s research area includes applications and implications of environmental nanotechnology with respect to the fate and transport of nanomaterials in the subsurface and use of nanomaterials for soil and groundwater remediation; in situ treatment of organic (chlorinated solvents) and inorganic (chromate, arsenic, nitrate, etc.) contaminants in groundwater and soil using permeable reactive barrier technologies and monitored natural attenuation approaches; and green infrastructure for storm water management. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and technical reports. He has served as a reviewer for 90 scientific journals. He is a winner of USEPA Bronze Medal, ORD Honor Awards, and USEPA Scientific and Technological Achievement Awards.
